I Need a Dog Bed that Doesn’t Smell

Several reasons why dog beds might smell.
Obviously, if your dog is a smelly dog in itself, the dog beds will also soon start to smell. If so, you will need to wash it frequently. Your dog bed might also be smelly simply because it is not waterproof or because you have a cold floor and there is condensation building up below it.
Smelly Dog: Need for Frequent Dog Bed Washing.
Some dogs produce a lot of grease in their coats. These are often heavy coated dogs like Labradors. Labradors grow a thick pelt with an oily undercoat. This means that they are practically waterproof and remain dry close to their skin after swimming. However, that oily/greasy coat means that those dogs often smell. The other reason why the dog bed might smell is that the dog has an interest in rolling in stuff. Fox poo, badger poo or any other disgusting stuff tend to attract even the nicest pooch.
Smelly Dog Bed: If the dog bed is not Waterproof.
If you have a dog bed that is not waterproof, you will sooner or later find that it smells. Slowly, but surely damp and grime will go through the cover and start to go sour inside. The ingrained smell of dirt and damp can dominate the room in a terrible way. The solution is to wash the bed, but there is a limit to the success of that if it is a large dog bed. At the end of the day you might not be able to wash a dog bed for a large dog. It won’t fit in to a washing machine and even if a launderette will wash it, the drying might be impossible. Unfortunately for the environment many of these inferior dog beds end up in landfill.
Smelly Dog bed due to Condensation.
If you sense a fusty, moldy smell in the room where the dog sleeps, it could be due to condensation. Do you have a relatively thin dog bed and a cold floor? You will find that the warmth from the dog will “meet” the cold from the floor and create condensation. If the room is bone dry this won’t happen, but just a little raised relative humidity will cause problems. It is physics and there is not much you can do about it apart from getting a better dog bed.
What is the Best Dog Bed for Preventing Smell?
In all the examples above, you will do well investing in a waterproof dog bed with removable, machine washable covers. This can either be a Tuffies Nest Bed with high sides or it can be a Tuffies Mattress bed. Both are 100% waterproof and come with or without extra covers.
Smelly Dog:
If your dog is a smelly dog you can take the cover off in seconds and wash it in the washing machine. Because the base-bed is made from top quality waterproof materials there will be no smell seeping in to the stuffing. Should your dog have an accident in the bed you can still clean the waterproof surface. To do this, you wash it over with a sponge. Use hot, soapy water and finally rinse it off with clean water from the garden hose. The whole bed will dry in an hour or two in a dry place.
Condensation:
Because Tuffies Dog Beds are always stuffed with a futon mattress filling it stays even and consistent. The mattress filling is so generous that the condensation problem is mostly gone. You would need to have an insanely high relative humidity to create condensation under a Tuffies dog bed. This is because the warmth from the dog can not penetrate the thick insulating mattress and cause condensation.
