In the first few years of Tuffies producing dog beds they made some mistakes. A thick polyester fabric with a PVC coating seemed like a great fabric. It looks and feels right. However, it appeared after a couple of years that customers had problems with the waterproofing. This did not suit the company and the research began. It turned out that the light grease that all dogs have in their coat is able to absorb the “plasticizer” in the fabric. This is a chemical that ensures that the waterproof coating remains subtle. With this chemical out of the fabric, the coating becomes brittle and cracks. It then follows that it will leak water. The fact that the chemicals leech into the dog’s coat is a whole different and worrying matter. Following on from this discovery Tuffies went purposefully on to find a different textile that would perform better.

Tuffies identified the perfect fabric. A super premium and top performing fabric does not come cheap, but that is the ethos of Tuffies: ONLY the best. The conclusion is that a 1000 denier Ballistic Nylon with a custom made polyurethane waterproof coating is the best. This has also been proven during the last 20+ years where Tuffies have used this fabric to make thousands of well loved dog beds.
