There are several views on what is the best waterproof dog bed for large dogs. The fact that you own one of the large dog breeds means that you have to make some careful choices about the bedding. Large dog beds are not easy to make and many are made by cutting corners using cheap materials. Lots of large dog beds are made from cheap polyester with a PVC backing. These dog beds lose their waterproofness quite quickly as the PVC cracks. To keep costs down manufacturers choose inferior materials and the dog bed doesn’t last. Not only is the casing cheap and cheerful, but the stuffing is also cheap and will not last very long. They stuffing is of course super important because if it is insubstantial, the dog will soon be lying on two pieces of fabric directly on the floor.

For a waterproof dog bed that will last you years, you need top quality materials and careful hand craft. The casing has to be something that can resist hard wear and tear as many dogs dig and claw at their beds. A ballistic Nylon with a thick polyurethane is what we at Tuffies have found to be the absolute best. The Nylon can withstand a LOT of digging from an large dog with strong claws. The polyurethane is ideal for dog beds because it is subtle and just bends and moves with the rough wear. It will never crack.
Use the Dog Bed Just as it is
From our sales we can see that about half of our customers choose a waterproof dog bed and use it without any extra covers. They other 50% choose to have a waterproof dog bed, but they also purchase a removable cover for the bed. The cover does make the bed look much neater and if you are more inclined to wash things in the washing machine, then a cover is your best solution. The advantage of using the bed without a cover is that cleaning it is super easy. You simply mix some hot, soapy water and wash the bed down. After a good scrub with a sponge, you just rinse the soapy water off and allow the bed to air dry.
The most important thing about dog beds is to keep the dog off the cold floor. Most large dogs are quite robust and all they need is the insulation and support. Many large breeds need orthopaedic dog beds in order to support their large frame and a good mattress is most important. The “warmth” of the cover is less important. Also, with large dogs you will need a large washing machine if you use a machine washable cover.

It is reallly a question of what suits YOU best: a waterproof dog bed just as it is, or a waterproof dog bed with a machine washable cover. Often our customers prefer the extra cover if the dog bed is going to be in the house and a simple coverless bed if it is for the kennel. If you have the bed with the cover you can even change the cover if you re-decorate the house.
It has to be said that it is an easy way to make everything look nice and clean when you have a freshly laundered dog bed cover.
